Traveled
The sun doesn’t warm my shoulders the same way it once seemed
The moon on the darkest night doesn’t have the same bright beam
I look to the sky to try to understand what has changed up there
Hoping for something to fall from it to comfort me way down here
I follow my shadow carefully around the day
Starting from nowhere and ending the same way
The roads I have traveled aren’t as long as they used to be
They are the same distance to travel but are less interesting to me
I hear the questions of anticipation and youth that mimic the past
Streaking through the day trying to get through it with great haste
These eyes have experienced horrors that have dampened the soul
Compounding inside the to make the darkest hole
Before I expose myself to the hottest of days
I smother my body with lotion to protect me from its violent rays
The shadow behind me is growing to an end
But I must continue forward even though someday I too will descend
The earth below my feet patiently waits for the day
That I lye my head down on it with no other intention but to stay
